Hampton County was originally part of Beaufort County, and this excellent book covers the Garnett area in Chapter 16, Upper St. Peter's Parish. It contains a picture of the Black Swamp Cemetery on page 303.
  2. J.G. Barrett, Sherman's March Through the Carolinas, The University of North Carolina Press, 1956, ISBN 0-8078-4566-3. The Sister's Ferry/Garnett area is covered in pages 40-48.
  3. T.O. Lawton, Jr., Upper St. Peter's Parish and Environs, 2001. This privately-published book covers the history of the Robertville-Lawtonville area, including several members of the Lawton family who are buried in the Black Swamp Cemetery. It is available at the Beaufort Public Library.
